Steel will play an important role in all renewables, including and especially solar and wind. Each new MW of solar power requires between 35 to 45 tons of steel, and each new MW of wind power requires 120 to 180 tons of steel. The solar market is divided into two areas. The first are smaller-scale rooftop panels mounted on homes, museums and stadiums. The second is utility-scale projects, which are larger consumers of steel. These plants produce a standard 100 to 300 MW of energy while some in development are approaching 1000 MW.
Shipbuilding
The introduction of metal to the shipbuilding industry helped to significantly revolutionize the industry as a whole, especially the development of stainless steel and aluminum alloys. Prior to the use of metal in shipbuilding, ships were constructed out of wood. Wood was much less suitable for ship construction because it is not durable or strong. Once metals like steel and aluminum hit the market, shipbuilders found that these were excellent materials for construction of various components of a ship. There are a variety of metals that can be utilized in shipbuilding. When determining the best metals for ships, it is important to focus on the metal’s yield strength and tensile strength. Of the metals that fit these requirements, the most common are steel and aluminum alloy.
Construction
Not only is steel affordable, readily available and safer, its intrinsic properties, such as strength, versatility, durability and 100% recyclability allow for improved environmental performance across the entire life cycle of buildings. The advanced high-strength steels used in steel-plate applications also find uses in a number of related industries. Offshore oil rigs, bridges, civil engineering and construction machines, rail carriages, tanks and pressure vessels, nuclear, thermal and hydroelectric plants – all these applications benefit from the attributes of modern steels.
